Beth visits

Hal writes:

My sister Beth came to visit us for a few days. Here are some pictures from her visit. The picture below is in front of Satellite Coffee Company, where Anna enjoys getting fresh roasted, fair trade coffee (either immediately in a cup or some beans to go). Additionally they have wonderful pastries (and this time they told us the bakery where they came from) and Mexican cokes (made with sugar instead of the US processed high-fructose corn syrup).

Across the street from the coffee shop is Wright Park where we took Riley for a walk and enjoyed our treats. Anna gives us a close up look of her drink and blueberry scone.

Later that afternoon we took a trip to Bainbridge Island.

Two Harbors High School rules! Go Agates! (For those of you not familiar, the agate is the high school mascot. We rock...)

On a suggestion from Beth's friend, we ate at "The Pub" near the Bainbridge Island Ferry landing. Beth and Anna outside the restaurant in front of the boats.

Another sappy photo of my wife and I.

On Sunday we went to hike at Mt. Rainier. Most of the roads are still under snow (best hiking available during mid-summer to late fall). We went to the Carbon River entrance and had to hike the four mile road in to see the maintain and some falls. The road was washed out in a couple of places, so the distance was limited to hikers and bikers.

These falls were so neat to hike up to. There had to be a 20 degree difference in temperature between standing next to the falls and walking just 20 feet into the woods.

The "braided" Carbon River. The water comes from the Carbon Glacier, one of the 20+ glaciers that reside on the top of Mount Rainier. There were makeshift bridges available to cross the river and riverbed in between the trail and the falls.

A couple close up looks at the Carbon Glacier.

A closer look at the riverbed where the water wasn't flowing on the day we hiked.

Beth and Anna brave the glacier cold water for a photo op.

Beth and I on a tree that we estimated (through ring counting) as over 500 years old.
