Just Using You For Your Friends Party

It's J-Term at PLU. For one month students take a single class. Many use this opportunity to go abroad (PLU was the first school to have students studying on all seven continents at the same time). But all the first-years stay on campus, so we use this as a good programming opportunity for them. One of activities in the EXPLORE! retreat where we take 200 first-years to a camp in the woods to talk about BEQs (big enough questions) about vocation and life. In addition to being a facilitator, I also was one of the speakers during the retreat. I didn't take pictures during the small group times, but I snapped a couple during the open activity times. Here is a picture of the indoor climbing wall. One of my group members did the easy wall blindfolded with help from four of his friends yelling directions. A wonderful study in group dynamics.

Anna and I have been able to make a few friends in WA. The joke is that we can keep using the few friends we have to meet their friends and increase our friendship circle. So we decided to host a fondue party with the theme of "We're Just Using You for Your Friends". The irony of the situation is we knew everyone in attendance, so really we just helped others increase their friendship circle.

Before the festivities started, here is the first food area. On the left is some sangria we made with an assortment of wine, followed by two dessert fondues (one chocolate, one white choclate raspberry) with angel food cake, lemon cake, cookies, and fruit. Next are the veggies and dip, followed by the cheese fondue and bread assortment.

Hal and Annie start in on the main course. Shrimp, chicken and beef with two types of fondue oil and five dips.

After snacking for a while, we decided to play the NEW cranium game, men vs. women. It's got some new twists on Cranium, but is basically the same format as the first game. Annie and Anna find something amusing near the start.

This weekend Anna had a chance to go snowshoeing with two friends. She was able to zoom in on this bird high in a tree.
